FREIGHT FORWARDING PROCESS

Freight Forwarding is a process of coordinating and shipping goods from one place to another. It involves strategic logistics planning and execution for the movement of goods internationally. The process is more complex than putting a box in the mail. There are some critical steps that are required to successfully deliver your cargo across various borders. Herein we look at the steps that must be fulfilled to achieve your desired international shipment.

  1. Export Documentation

The relevant documentation is highly imperative for any shipment to start moving. Without the documentation, your cargo will not be accepted at any border. Below is a list of the standard documentation that is usually required for your cargo to start moving.

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Export shipping Bill
  • Bill of lading
  • Certificate of origin
  • Insurance certificate
  • Letter of credit – if applicable
  • Declaration of hazardous cargo – if applicable

  1. Export Haulage

This is the first physical movement of goods. The cargo is moved from the shipper’s location to the Freight Forwarder’s warehouse. The goods are screened to check if it is in good order.

  1. Export Customs Clearance

Before the cargo is shipped off it needs to be cleared from the country of origin. Your Freight Forwarder normally performs this task, if not you can source a third-party customs broker. Once the items are cleared, they are transported to the destination country.

  1. Import Customs Clearance

At this point, the cargo arrives at the destination country and the import customs documentation must be verified by the local officials. Your Freight Forwarder or designated customs broker completes this task. To speed up the process, it is best for this process to start before the goods arrive.

  1. Destination Arrival and Handling

Upon arrival, the handling process is underway. Receiving and reviewing documentation for the goods as well as any additional documents such as carrier bills, etc. The Freight Forwarder is responsible for this process.

  1. Import Haulage

This is the last leg of the race. The goods leave the warehouse to their final destination in the same manner as the Export Haulage step.

These steps outline the general Freight Forwarding process that usually takes place in international shipping. Prior to the commencement of these steps, your Freight Forwarder will set an optimized route plan for your cargo and destination needs.
